|The Food Science Institute (FSI) was established in 2001 to integrate the expertise in food science across K-State. FSI facilitates the undergraduate, graduate, and online education programs and provides both research and technical assistance for the food industries. Approximately, 57 nationally and internationally recognized faculty from five colleges and 11 departments serve as teachers, mentors, researchers, and extension specialists in the following areas: food chemistry, food microbiology, food safety, veterinary medicine, cereal science, dairy science, meat science, food service, sensory analysis, food engineering, human nutrition, and product development. We look forward to assisting you in the area of food science.|

Dr. Randy Phebus Named Interim Director of the Food Science Institute
Please welcome Dr. Randy Phebus, Professor of Food Safety, as the Interim Director of the K-State Food Science Institute. Dean of Agriculture John Floros recently announced this appointment, which begins July 3 and will remain in effect until a permanent director is announced. Dr. Phebus has been a core faculty in the interdepartmental food science program since 1992, and in the Food Science Institute since its inception in 2001. The FSI would like to thank Dr. Ken Odde, Professor and Head of the Department of Animal Sciences & Industry, for effectively serving as our Acting Director since the retirement of Dr. Curtis Kastner (Director, 2001-2015).
American Dairy Science Association names new President and Scholar Award
Karen Schmidt, a professor of animal science and chair of the food science undergraduate program at Kansas State University, was named the president of the American Dairy Science Association during the group's recent annual meeting. Jayendra "Jay" Amamcharla was recognized as the 2017 recipient of the ADSA Foundation Scholar Award in dairy foods.
Product Development Team receives 2nd place!
Congratulations to the Mate Au Lait product development team for winning second place in the National Dairy Council competition! The team members included Karthick Babu, Mayla Baez, and Conrad Kabus. Their advisor is Dr. Jayendra Amamcharla.

Save the Date! Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems Lecture
The fourth lecture in the series will be presented by Dr. Jason Clay, Senior Vice President for Markets and Food at the World Wildlife Fund. Dr. Clay will be speaking about "Feeding the World, Sustaining the Planet." Dr. Clay works with some of the world's largest companies to reduce their impact on the environment. In addition to his work with the WWF, he is the author of 20 books and is National Geographic's first-ever Food and Sustainability Fellow.
Please hold the date of Monday, September 11, 2017. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in McCain Auditorium at Kansas State University.
