Postdoctoral Researcher in Food Microbiology

A postdoctoral position is immediately available for research focusing on food safety and microbiology in the laboratory of Dr. En Huang in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The candidate is expected to design and perform experiments, analyze experimental data, generate summary reports, give scientific presentations, and summarize findings in written format for publication. The candidate will conduct research dealing with development of novel antimicrobial agents, suitable for food, feed, or medical applications. The candidate will carry out research on isolation and identification of new antimicrobial-producing microorganisms, chemical elucidation of antimicrobial compounds, and investigate the mechanism of inactivation of bacterial pathogens of the newly-discovered antimicrobials. Other potential research areas include nonthermal processing technologies, novel methods of pathogen detection, microbiomes, genomics of foodborne pathogens, and characterization of mechanisms responsible for persistence of pathogens in foods or environments. The candidate will assist with other research activities, including coordination and operation of the research program, graduate student training, and activities related to obtaining and managing grants.


Recent PhD. in food microbiology, food science, microbiology, molecular biology, or related fields. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good command of the English language (speaking and writing), as well as analytical and computational skills are essential. Experiences in molecular biology, foodborne pathogens, cell culture, animal research, and instrumental analysis (e.g., HPLC and mass spectrometry) are preferred.
